Growing Together: How Motherhood Redefined My Meaning of Success

Before becoming a mother, I was a workaholic who was very focused on my career. I often worked until midnight and was always pushing myself to achieve more.

My dream was to grow professionally, earn a promotion, and eventually move into a senior or management position. I valued hard work, achievement, and building a successful career for myself.

I continue to work hard towards my goals, while learning to slow down, be present and give my child the time and attention he needs as we grow together.

The Woman I was before Motherhood

HER Story

One experience that has truly shaped my journey into motherhood is being my son’s main caregiver and growing alongside him.

As my only child, his well-being, character and future are always important to me. The moments that touch me most are when we experience and learn new things together, such as visiting the zoo, taking on little challenges, playing together or even cooking at home.

Whenever he says, “I love you, Mummy,” it reminds me that motherhood is not only about guiding him as he grows, but also about creating precious memories and growing together.

What surprised me most about becoming a mother is how much I learn from my child while he learns from me.

He has a strong understanding of people and different personalities. Of course, he has his challenging moments too but instead of only correcting him, I try to help him understand the pros and cons of his behaviour and actions.

Motherhood has taught me that we are both growing, learning and becoming better together.

Motherhood has taught me that I am capable of being both strong and caring.

I still have the hardworking and determined personality I had before, but I have learned to become more patient, understanding and flexible.

Most importantly, my priorities have changed.

I now understand that success is not only about career achievements. It is also about being present for my son, guiding him and growing together with him.

The woman I was before motherhood is still very much a part of who I am today. But motherhood has added another dimension for me. I’ve learned to understands when to keep pushing forward, and when to slow down and simply be present.

Perhaps growth in motherhood is not about choosing between the woman you once were and the mother you have become. It is about allowing both versions of yourself to grow together.

Motherhood doesn’t mean leaving behind the woman you once were. Your dreams, determination and ambitions can still be part of who you are, even as your priorities begin to change.

Sometimes, growth means learning to slow down, becoming more patient and finding joy in simply being present. As we guide our children through life, they are also teaching us, shaping us and growing alongside us.

Success may look different after motherhood, but it doesn’t become any less meaningful. You are still growing, still becoming, and still allowed to pursue the woman you want to be.
